Zip Facts about Turkey: 

  • It is believed that the last meal on Noah’s Ark was “Asure”, a sweet and sour pudding made from 20 different ingredients, still a favorite in Turkey
  • Dutch tulips came from Turkey. Coffee was introduced to the Europeans by the Turks.  They eat fresh baked bread with every meal unless it is a pasta dish
  • Although the bird turkey is native to the Americas, Europeans mistook them for the guinea fowl of Turkey, and hence, the name
  • When Julius Caesar defeated the Kingdom of Pontus in Turkey, he declared the famous “Veni, Vidi, Vici” (I came, I saw, I conquered)
  • Many “firsts” are attributed to Turkey:  oldest tin mine, first recorded international treaty, first Neolithic paintings found on man-made walls, oldest known human settlement, first church (St. Peter’s), first Santa Claus (birthplace of St. Nicholas), to name a few
