Zip Facts about Tanzania:

  • Tanganyika “sail in wilderness” and Zanzibar “fair is this island” were once one nation before they became Tanzania and part of Zanzibar in 1964
  • The world’s largest complete crater is Tanzania’s extinct Ngorongoro Crater.  Some of the earliest human remains were discovered in Olduvai Gorge.  Mount Kilimanjaro, a dormant volcanic mountain is not only the highest mountain in Africa but the highest free-standing mountain in the world
  • The world’s largest crab, the coconut crab, makes its home on Chumbe Island (Zanzibar)
  • Modesty dictates that women must still wear skirts, but can breastfeed openly and uncovered in public
  • Lake Natron, an incredibly salty body of water in Northern Tanzania with a pH of 10 and temperatures reaching 120oF, is home to blue-green algae and alkaline tilapia and provides both a nesting and feeding habitat for flamingoes, protecting their eggs against predators
