Zip Facts about Seychelles:

  • Seychelles is an archipelago nation with 155 islands, the largest is Aldabra Atoll, not the main island of Mahe.  The granite islands are the oldest in the world
  • Aldabra, a group of Seychelles islands boasts the largest raised coral atoll, the largest population of giant tortoises, the White-Throated Rail. the only flightless bird in the Indian Ocean, and the largest percentage of land mass for a nature reserve
  • Seychelles is predominantly Roman Catholic, has a matriarchal society, and Creole is spoken by over 90% of its inhabitants
  • The national motto of Seychelles,  the smallest country in Africa, is “The end crowns the work” or my interpretation, good work yields good results
  • The world’s largest nut and heaviest seed is produced by one of the oldest palm trees, coco de mer, unique to Seychelles.  They have been estimated to live well over 1000 years, their seeds take 2 years to germinate, and from flower to fruit can take up to 10 years to mature
