Zip Facts about Saint Kitts and Nevis:

  • The center of both islands is a volcanic mountain range with black and white beaches on opposite sides. Nevis is smaller, surrounded by coral reefs, is almost solely a single mountain, and is separated from St. Kitts by “The Narrows” channel.  Together, they are part of the Leeward Islands and the oldest colonized territories of the Caribbean
  • St. Kitts is the nickname of the patron saint of its discoverer, Christopher Columbus, originally named San Cristobal by him.  The current full name of the islands is the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis
  • While American tourists enjoy local food favorites such as goat water stew, mutton curry, or pepper-pot stew, they can also get a taste of home at Kentucky Fried Chicken in the capital city of Basseterre
  • The motto of the island is “Country above self”
  • Green Vervet Monkeys are the favorite pets of the Kittitians
