Zip Facts about Russia:

  • Russia, or the Russian Federation, was formerly part of the Soviet Union until 1991, and is the largest country in the world.  It is also considered a transcontinental because of its size, as it stretches over much of eastern and north-eastern Europe and the whole of northern Asia and borders more countries than any other country on the planet
  • Russia adopted equal rights for men and women even before America did
  • Although Russia is largest in land mass, spanning over nine time zones, it is only ninth in terms of population size
  • The first and only President of the USSR was Mikhail Gorbachev
  • At the Kremlin in Moscow stands the Tsar Kolokol, the world’s largest bell.  It cracked soon after it was made in 1735 and has never been rung
