Zip Facts about Federated States of Micronesia:

  • The four stars of the national flag (still in the color of the UN flag) represent the four culturally different states (Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei, and Yap) united over a blue background (West Pacific Ocean). The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) along with the Republic of Palau make up the archipelago, the Caroline Islands
  • The inhabitants of Pohnpei, the largest island and capital of FSM relax with a drink of sakau, the numbing ceremonial drink which is also sold in bars. This may also be accompanied by the local custom of chewing the beetle nut with coral lime powder
  • Kosrae, the second largest island in the FSM, is unique in Micronesia as a solitary island surrounded by a reef. The other islands have small islands in close proximity
  • Chuukese lovesticks are slender, dagger-shaped wooden rods carved on each side. Traditionally, an Island man would carve his personal notches on the lovestick and would kneel beside the thatched wall opposite where a girl lay sleeping at night, poke the stick through the wall entangling her hair.  She could then identify the owner by feeling the shaft’s notches
  • Although not legal tender in the international currency market, the doughnut-shaped limestone coins of Yap (largest in the world) are still used as money on the islands
