Zip Facts about Mexico:

  • In 7/7/07, online voters determined the “new” Seven Wonders of the World, the Mayan City of Chicken Itza, Mexico was one of them (if you stand by its pyramid, you might be able to hear a bird singing). The others were, in no order, The Great Wall, China; The Taj Mahal, India; Machu Picchu, Peru; Christ Redeemer, Brazil – Large Statue; The Roman Colosseum, Italy and Petra, Jordan – Ancient City
  • We can thank Mexico for introducing the three C’s to the world: corn, chilies, and chocolate
  • Originating in Mexico, the red poinsettia (cuetlaxochitl), commonly decorating the Christmas season in the U.S., was named after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first U.S ambassador to Mexico
  • It took a while longer than in the U.S. before women had the right to vote in presidential elections, until 1958
  • Mexican children are given both their father’s last name and their mother’s maiden name in an effort to preserve their heritage
