Zip Facts about Ireland:

  • Irish nationalism and Catholicism go hand in hand for the 90% majority in Ireland
  • On December 26, St. Stephen’s Day (Wren Day) is celebrated by the “Wren Boys”, young men who dress up and parade in the hunt for the wren, sacred to the ancient druids
  • On October 31, the Irish celebrate the Gaelic festival of Samhain (halfway between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice) to mark the end of the harvest. By the 9th century, this holiday merged with All Soul’s/All Saint’s day to become the more contemporary Halloween celebration
  • There are typically four meals in Ireland, breakfast, dinner (midday and main meal), tea (different from British high tea) and supper (lighter meal before retiring for the night). Meat roasts and stews and seafood are traditional with sides of potatoes, bread, and vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, carrots, and turnips
  • The Irish-born physicist, John Tyndall, helped to answer the question of why the sky is blue. The Tyndall effect, light scattering by particles in a colloid or fine suspension, the longer wavelength blue light is scattered more strongly than shorter wavelengths
