Zip Facts about Hungary:

  • Hungarian bread (Magyar kenyer) is a very important component of both urban and rural cuisine. Pig breeding, the prominent animal breeding since the late 1800s, moved pork products into the national diet
  • Hungarians are known for their wines and their consumption, but beer drinking is much more common
  • The shortage of apartments for married couples force them to move in with the parents who welcome them and have the most room. Grandparents are considered a great help and godparenthood is valued
  • The many contributions by Hungarians include holography, the hydrogen bomb theory, BASIC programming language, the ballpoint pen, and the Rubik’s cube
  • Kincsem (“my treasure), the most famous Hungarian bred racing horse, was “undefeatable” winning all of her 54 races
