Zip Facts about Italy:

  • In 1870, the twenty regions of Italy were united into one country. Rome separates the wealthier northern and central “European” region from the historically forgotten “Mediterranean” southern part of the mainland
  • While Italian fathers are the head of the household, mothers do wield great power, especially over their sons
  • Pasta was not invented by the Italians but it is definitely the national food, especially in the southern regions. Espresso, very strong coffee, is a popular Italian beverage that can be served in a variety of ways, including black, lungo (diluted), freddo (iced) or macchiato (with milk)
  • Pasta may not have been invented by Italians, but pizza was and so were ice cream cones, eyeglasses, espresso machines, the telephone, and the typewriter, to name a few
  • Italians love their leisure time and is expressed in their popular phrase, “”Ars longa, vita brevis” translated as “Art is long, life is short”
