Zip Facts about Latvia:

  • Before the Soviet occupation, Latvia was predominantly a rural society, which has been captured both in its folk songs (dainas) and in its landscape art movement
  • Riga, the largest city of the three Baltic States (Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania) and the capital of Latvia, is known for some of the best Art Nouveau architecture in Europe
  • Wheat, rye, and potatoes are the mainstays of the Latvian diet, along with dairy products, such as curd cheese, sour cream, butter, and milk. Pork and smoked fish are commonly eaten and celebrated meals may contain yeast breads, such as klingeris, or piragi bread stuffed with onions and bacon
  • While men and women share equal employment levels, and more women graduate from university than men, Latvian males are four times more likely to become employers. Women are still underrepresented in the political arena, and may be primarily employed as teachers or nurses, or other lower paying occupations
  • The Latvia, Jacob Davis, invented and brought the rivets to Levi Strauss to make their very famous jeans
