Zip Facts about Madagascar:

  • Madagascar, referred to the Red Island because of its soil, is the fourth largest island in the world (barring island continents) after Greenland, Papua New Guinea, and Borneo. It was originally attached to the Indian subcontinent and has more Asian than African influences
  • Vanilla is one of Madagascar’s largest imports, so when Coca-Cola switched to artificial vanillin with the introduction of the new coke formula in 1985, the economy of Madagascar dramatically dropped. Fortunately for Madagascar, Coca-Cola switched back
  • The lemur in its natural habitat is only found in Madagascar, 70% of its wildlife species and 90% of its native plants are found nowhere else in the world
  • While soccer is popular in Madagascar, rugby is the national sport but also enjoyed is moraingy (hand-to-hand combat) and tolon-omby (wrestling zebu cattle)
  • Patricia Wright, American primatologist, anthropologist, and conservationist has rediscovered the greater bamboo lemur and serendipitously found a new species, Hapalemur aureus, the golden bamboo lemur in Madagascar
