Zip Facts about Papua New Guinea:

  • Papua New Guinea, including the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, and the Bougainville Island, is the second largest island in the world, after Greenland. Politically, it is still a part of the Solomon Islands
  • Papua comes from the Malay word “papuwah” for the “frizzled” nature of Melanesian hair
  • Seashells were used as currency until 1933
  • Root crops such as taro, sago, and yams are the basis for the traditional dishes of Papua New Guinea
  • The only known poisonous bird on earth, the Hooded Pitohui (Pitohui dichrous), makes its home in Papua New Guinea. Touching the bird causes tingling and numbness from the homobatrachotoxin, a neurotoxin found in the feathers and skin
