 Zip Facts about Peru:

  • Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, the Nazca Lines in the Nazca Desert of southern Peru are a series of ancient geoglyphs.
  • It is thought that the avocado, the tomato, and the potato originated in Peru, hence the phrase “Soy mas Peruano que la papa” (I am more Peruvian than thepotato)
  • A New Year’s tradition is the giving of yellow underpants to friends and family
  • Peru is known for their many natural and man-made wonders including Cerro Blanco (the highest sand dune in the world), the Nazca Lines, the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, the Amazon Jungle and Rain Forest, Cotahuasi Canyon (twice as deep as the Grand Canyon) and Lake Titicaca (the world’s highest navigable lake)
  • A traditional festival dish is the crispy “cuy” or guinea pig, served whole. The national drink is the “Pisco Sour”, using Pisco brandy, sugar water, lemons, egg whites, ice and a splash of bitters
