Zip Facts about Vanuatu:

  • Vanuatu (“Land Eternal”) is an archipelago of more than 80 islands and is located between Fiji and New Caledonia, about 1,400 miles off the coast of Australia and straddles the “Pacific Ring Of Fire”
  • The island was originally inhabited by the “Melanesian” people.  Melanesia, from the Greek meaning “Black Islands”, comprises the four major island countries; Vanuatu, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands and some other non-independent states, including New Caledonia
  • In 1839, the first missionaries arrived in Vanuatu, two were eaten
  • The traditional drink of Vanuatu is kava, and the national dish is ‘lap – lap’, a sweet or savory vegetable porridge, cooked in coconut milk
  • In addition to English and French, Bislama (from the Portuguese word for sea cucumber) is pidgin English and considered one of the official languages of Vanuatu.  Vanuatu has over 100 indigenous languages making it known for the greatest number of languages per person in the world
