Syrian-Inspired Meatballs (Syria)

My modifications of Syrian meatballs

Yield: 8 Servings

1 pound ground beef
1 onion, finely chopped
2 large tomatoes peeled, finely diced
4 tablespoons fresh parsley finely chopped
1 1/2 teaspoons Bharat spice mix
1/2 teaspoon salt
Fresh ground pepper to taste, ground garlic (optional)

Mix the ground beef with 2 tbsps of parsley, salt, pepper, 1 tsp bharat, (garlic) and 1 egg. Mix well but do not overwork. Add breadcrumbs to the desired consistency. Brown the meatballs in oil. Remove the meatballs and saute onions for 2 minutes in drippings. Add tomatoes to pan with onions, add salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for 20 minutes, add the meatballs, cover, and continue to simmer until meatballs are thoroughly cooked, about 15 minutes. Add ½ tsp of bharat and the remaining parsley, cover and simmer about 10 more minutes.

Baharat – Syrian Spice Mix (Syria)

This is my variation on the spice mix using the ingredients in amounts shifting a little more to the savory. Since there are many cultural differences in the percentages of these spices in the mix, feel free to experiment.

Yield: 4 Servings

3 teaspoons allspice
1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon cardamom

Grind spices together. Store excess in air-tight container.
